LIMPOPO PROVINCE, POLOKWANE: Limpopo Government, under the auspices of
Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) and Limpopo
Tourism Agency (LTA), will convene the Provincial Tourism Lekgotla within the broad
strategic context of formulating a common approach and understanding on a range of
key issues and challenges facing the Tourism Industry in Limpopo.
In the past five years the National Tourism Sector Strategy sought to increase the
number of tourists visiting South Africa or making trips throughout the country
through implementing the 5-in-5 strategy (which is 5 million tourists in 5 years). The
central objective was to increase the direct contribution of tourism to the economy
from R118 billion to R302 billion by 2026 through collaborative planning and the
implementation of agreed priority actions. To a greater extent, some of the priority
actions in terms of numbers were achieved, whilst there was a continuing gap on
tourism infrastructure that should aid development. Given the COVID-19 pandemic
that broke-out in 2020, the tourism industry the hardest hit with long lasting negative
impacts.
